Question: Is there something low-brow about merlot? why did paul giamatti's "sideways" character have disdain for it?

There's nothing at all low-brow about merlot. I think it's a combination of two things: merlot is a more approachable drink for people just starting to explore red wine, and it wasn't as well-known as cabernet sauvignon or pinot noir at the time. I'd rather have a good merlot than a fair cabernet any day.
