Red wine is quickly altered by oxygen (in the air). This happens faster the warmer it is. So, to keep the wine tasking good, you need to keep the air out and keep the temperature down. Seal the bottle well (cork is obviously a good choice) and keep it as cold as possible without freezing (fridge is good). Before you reopen it, let it come back to room temperature. That way, it will suck in less air when you open it. Even with these precautions, red wine doesn't keep long. A day or two at most. Best to drink the whole bottle with friends/ family in one shot, or buy smaller bottles. Here in Canada, wine is also available in cans and tetrapacks, which are handy.

You can buy plastic reusable stoppers from supermarkets to put in the top .These seem to work well. Its best kept in fridge and only brought out again 1/ 2 hour before you drink it, unless you like it chilled.

Red or white wine will begin to oxidize very soon after opening. Merlot, or any other red wine can be stored at room temperature provided it it sealed properly and kept for no more than a day or two. White wine will last longer after refrigerating it, but red wine can be refrigerated provided you let it reach room temperature before serving.
