What is the difference between grauburgunder and pinot gris?

Question: What is the difference between grauburgunder and pinot gris?

(Posted by: Alex W on 2010-01-31 12:20:30)

I was wondering if there is a difference between grauburgunder and pinot gris... I had grauburgunder wine from Heger in Germany last month and I have been looking all over trying to find it. Unfortunately, almost no one sells Heger or Grauburgunder. Can anyone help or suggest a wine that would be very similar to Dr. Heger Grau Burgunder. The label looks like this: http:/ / www.germanwine.net/ estates/ heger/ 703lb_PG.JPG except that instead of Pinot Gris, it says Grau Burgunder

They are synonymous. Grau Burgunder is just another way to state the pinot gris varietal the common use in Germany. Research the Baden region of Germany for more information on it. This type of multiple naming is common in most beverage industries including wine.

They are synonymous. Grau Burgunder is simply another name for pinot gris. Often a pinot gris made in Germany, meant to be sold in the german market. Grau Burgunder is also most heavily planted in Germany in the Baden region where the Heger winery is. In the wine world almost all grapes varieties will have multiple names depending on style, location, country of origin, language, and market. hope this helps!
