Can wine "go off" or go bad?

Question: Can wine "go off" or go bad?

(Posted by: princess_kitty on 2010-03-10 03:11:54)

I went to open it and it opened so easily i think it was already open.. (screw cap, stupid new technology) i know wine can go vinegarry, but that isnt going to hurt you i guess... im wondering, if it still smells okay, is it possible for it to be bad? i dont quite know whether this bottle got opened before i put it in the fridge or if it's been opened since, and i dont want to get people sick if i put it in food or whatever. its possible its been open for months and out of the fridge its white wine and its possible it was exposed to fairly warm weather as it was in a garage which is not insulated during warm weather

Also, store wines on their side; never standing up.

Wine does have a shelf life after opening in regards to taste. Bad wine will just taste bad, it won't make you sick. Ideally you should finish a bottle of wine ten to fourteen days tops after opening. Also the vibration of a refrigerator can effect the taste of wine. Red wine really shouldn't be refrigerated anyways.

Wine, beer, and people rise to a peak and then go into a decline. If the wine still smells good, taste it. If it taste good, drink it. Wine only changes to vinegar when it is contaminated with the "right " bacteria. As for the screw caps, I'm all in favor of them. They can't get "corked ", they are easy to open and reseal, and you can store the wine in any position you want. I'm perfectly willing to sacrifice the tradition and mystique of using a corkscrew.
